Back to East 29th Street

Manhattan's East Side has undergone nearly continuous urban change over the past sixty years. Kips Bay, a very small district or neighborhood in New York's midtown, went from older tenements and lofts to a higher rise complex of apartments and, along lst Avenue, to Medical Row. The author lived in the 300 block on E. 29th St from 1934-1937. Having left Kips Bay at 10, he did not retain any friendships and lost touch with the neighborhood. As a retired professor of geography he has reconstructed some of the old neighborhood from airphotos, maps, new encounters and his own recollections.
