By Imre Sutton
Manhattan's East Side has undergone nearly continuous urban change over the past sixty years. Kips Bay, a very small district or neighborhood in New York's midtown, went from older tenements and lofts to a higher rise complex of apartments and, along lst Avenue, to Medical Row. The author lived in the 300 block on E. 29th St from 1934-1937. Having left Kips Bay at 10, he did not retain any friendships and lost touch with the neighborhood. As a retired professor of geography he has reconstructed some of the old neighborhood from airphotos, maps, new encounters and his own recollections. About half of the photos are downloaded from the NY Public Library digital photo collection. (Most of text taken from back cover.)
