By Sonia Chadwick Hawkes
"The Anglo-Saxon cemetery at Worthy Park, Kingsworthy, 5 km north of Winchester, represents an important chapter in the history of the 5th-7th century Saxons. Excavations in 1961-2 by the distinguished Anglo-Saxon scholar Sonia Chadwick Hawkes uncovered 94 inhumation graves and 46 cremations within an area of approximately 900 square metres. Mrs. Hawke's report remained unpublished at the time of her death in 1999. This long-awaited volume brings together all the texts and drawings left substantially complete by Mrs Hawkes, comprising her introduction to the site, the detailed catalogue of burials, a report on the human bone, and a small number of specialist analyses. A gazetteer compiled by her of early Anglo-Saxon sites in Hampshire places Kingsworthy firmly within its contemporary context."--BOOK JACKET.
