In the darkest days of The Great Depression, after losing her father to a freak accident, Cherry's mother becomes sick and has to go to a sanitarium in Arizona to recover. Cherry has to go live with her mother's cousin and her ill-tempered husband. Mr. Dukes doesn't like little girls--at all!--so with a change of clothes and a haircut, Cherry becomes Jerry. With Mrs. Dukes constantly complaining about what a burden Cherry--Jerry--is, it looks as if her stay is going to be horrible.
After her first almost disastrous encounter with a new neighbor, she finally meets some of the other neighbors and discovers that her opinion of her foster family is shared by everyone she meets, and she begins to have some fun. A surprise ending will put a smile on your face, so be sure to join Cherry in her adventures in the sun.
