Literacy and learning

This text examines in detail two basic questions: what is literacy and how do individuals become literate? It is a compendium of contemporary resource materials and practice. Coverage includes: various definitions of literacy, fundamental reasons for promoting it, and contemporary debates; the invention of alphabetic literacy, its effect upon reading and writing and the conditions that promote social literacy; and instructional strategies for teaching literacy.
