Renzo Piano

The new Fondation Beyeler building opened in Riehen, Switzerland in 1997. It was designed to house the collection privately built up by Ernst and Hildy Beyeler until 1982. Both before and after 1982 parts of the collection were viewable in the couple's own Galerie Beyeler [also located in Riehen]. Between 1982 and 1997 [when the Galerie closed] the collection was administered by the Fondation Beyeler [betwen 1982 and 1997 an administrative body only]. From 1997 the Fondation Beyeler became the name of both the administrative body and the new building.
